Energy conversion from renewable energy sources

With its experience and know-how, Raw Power is particularly accomplished in energy conversion from renewable energy sources, with the aim of developing innovative and unique solutions.

We are able to provide solutions for energy conversion systems both for stand-alone (with battery management) and grid-connected applications spanning from micro-generation from renewable sources (solar, wind, hydro) and cogeneration.

Photovoltaic Systems

In the first year of operation, Raw Power developed a prototype of a 4kW photovoltaic inverter for grid connected operation. Raw Power has been involved with every aspect of the project: by developing the Maximum Power Point Tracking algorithm (MPPT) to ensure the maximum yield of the photovoltaic system, up to the regulatory issues that rule the injection of electricity into the grid. It also developed the user interface for managing and monitoring the inverter power production and implemented specific solutions to solve problems related to the transformered architecture, and to improve the quality of the power injected into the grid.

Currently Raw Power is continuing to develop solutions for photovoltaic converters with up to date transformerless architectures, with the aim of developing more compact, low cost, solutions. All in full compliance with the latest regulations (DK5940rev2, CEI 11-20, 2007).

Micro Wind Turbines

Raw Power is also active in the study of converters dedicated to micro wind turbines applications (up to 20 kW). Thanks to the extensive knowledge both in the field of electric machines control (for optimal management of the generator) and in the field of energy conversion for grid connected interface, Raw Power is able to provide custom solutions with cutting-edge performance. Raw Power has also developed mathematical models to evaluate the performances of different converter architectures and is able to propose original solutions for the new hybrid vertical-axis direct-drive turbines, which are becoming popular for use in urban areas.

Cogeneration

Raw Power developed active controls for induction generators used in cogeneration plants in the micro-distributed generation. A static power converter is used to manage the energy flows in the two modes of operation of the micro cogeneration system. The grid-connected operation during which power is injected into the distribution grid, and the island operation in which the system acts as a stand-alone generator.

Switching converters

Raw Power can design and develop custom solutions for DC-DC and DC-AC switching power supplies for various applications. high efficiency DC-DC converters (3boost), high-fidelity automotive audio amplifiers with innovative hybrid architectures (tandem), able to combine high efficiency levels with extremely low harmonic distortion.

Raw Power also developed power converters for the control of actuators based on innovative materials, such as shape memory alloys (SMA) and to control of thermoelectric cells (Peltier effect).
